Ozark Sufi Camp Spring

May 22-27 2008

Featured Teachers

Asha Greer is a senior teacher in the Sufi Ruhaniat International order. She was a founding member of the Lama foundation. She has been meditating for fifty years and considers silence and retreat an important part of her path. She was a school teacher for many years, a nurse for many years; started a hospice in her hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia; settled many Tibetans in Charlottesville; has had several shows of her paintings and does Japanese Tea Ceremony. Her major interest is the baffling, mysterious and magnificent reality which surrounds us.

Note: Sara Morgan will not be able to join us this Spring, due to Health issues ...Keep her in your prayers.

I am very pleased to announce that Chris Wells will be one of our guest teachers at Spring Camp 2008.

He replaces Sara Morgan who reluctantly had to cancel for health reasons. Sara sends her love and regrets to all.

Chris Wells founded New Mexico All Species Project in 1979. I met Chris on New Years Eve 1986 at a World Peace Ceremony by a statue of Saint Francis in a Santa Fe park. He invited us to a party at Elaine Sutton's home. (Elaine brought the writing class to camp.) I felt a strong feeling of being at home there, a benevolent presence. Chris told a story, sang a song and I decided to start the Heartland All Species Project with Stan Slaughter which has been going now 22 years.

Chris will have much to share at Spring Camp. He can lead us in chants and rattle songs from many cultures. He can present many of his own great songs and songs of many bioregions for guitar. Chris worked on Alan Watts’s houseboat in Sausalito. He met Murshid Sam in the hallway of an art center in Sausalito and was given spontaneous advice.

He was told to go to South America by Rolling Thunder to live with native people there in 1969 rather than go to the military. He traveled by land extensively for 10 years studying the annual public celebrations of native peoples in South and North America and Scandinavia. He has created many citywide pageant theaters, interdisciplinary, public participation studios and school programs that have inspired people's lives and help them to live in their bioregions with the many others.

Manur Johnson will be joining us for a day or two

Mansur Johnson is the author of Murshid, a biography of Murshid Samual Lewis the originator of the Dances of Universal Peace. In the 1960s, Mansur was a close associate and a secretary of Murshid Sam. He will share Sam stories and talk about his book.
Mansur Johnson is a father, Sufi, world traveler, union member, writer, spiritual teacher, photographer, and activist.
In the late 1970s, Mansur joined with Sufi Bryn Beorse to lobby for ocean energy, known as Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC). A free download of his memoir, Shamcher, of that experience is available on line (google "Shamcher, by Mansur Johnson").
In the late 90s there was Travels with Marianne, a self-published travel book with photos encompassing eight journeys, including trips to Italy, Switzerland, Crete, Peru, Bolivia, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, France, Morocco, Mexico, Guatemala, and Iran.
In 2001 Mansur joined two Witness for Peace delegations to Colombia and resulted in one of the first articles documenting Cola Cola's crimes in Colombia as well as his Spanish language study.
In 2005, He produced an interview with Global Exchange's Deborah James and a dvd of his Venezuela Teach-In about Hugo Chavez’s policies.
His recent visit to China and Tibet with a group of chi kung practitioners resulted in a China retrospective and a desire to explore the five Daoist and four Buddhist sacred mountains in China . A return tour is in the works. Like other world travelers with a conscience who experience environmental degradation and over-population, Mansur returned awakened and determined to do what he can.

Letter from Our Spiritual Director

Let the environmental and world political crises that we face deepen our resolve to open our hearts and minds to their full potential. For over 26 years our camps have been opening a space of trust and encouragement to sincere seekers. Using spiritual practices from all paths, we strive to master ourselves for the benefit of all.

As you read this, please set your intention for camp and lean into that intention each day with the practice of your choice until camp.

Camp starts now.

Amin Marty Kraft, Camp Director

Spring camp theme is The All Pervading Life in Space - (More on theme.)

The theme comes from the prayer, Nayaz, by Hazrat Inayat Khan – “Beloved Lord, All Mighty God, Through the rays of the sun, through the waves of the air, through the all pervading life in space, purify, revivify and I pray, heal my body heart and soul.”

Camp begins Thursday, May 22nd, with dinner and an evening zikr.

Friday from 9am-4pm will be an adapted Sufi Sesshin; silent meditation interlaced with Zikr, dance, practices or sobhet.

Friday evening through Tuesday morning will follow our more traditional camp format with a variety of classes, dance, zikr and universal worship.
About Inner Preparation: I have often realized, near the end of past camps, what I came for. "Oh, I wish camp was longer. Why didn't I remember at the beginning?" I know about intention and how I can be more and more conscious with each interaction, passing love and support along to others. But it takes some time to remember at a deep enough level to have the potency or the consciousness to pass it on to others. What if I start camp in the state where I usually end it. As camp approaches I intend to be more and more conscious of the possibilities of, "whenever two or more are gathered". Please join me in a way that you know works for you. Let us begin to prepare ourselves now so when camp begins we're conscious enough to serve at the deepest levels.

Scholarship Help Available

Would a scholarship be helpful?

Dearest Seekers,

"Toward the One, the Perfection of Love ,Harmony, and Beauty, the only Being, United with All the Illuminated Souls, who form the Embodiment of the Master, the Spirit of Guidance."

We would like to invite you to a party. We will be preparing and serving fabulous food and drink, cleaning and providing space for our Beloved Family, new friends and old, teachers and pupils. Needed to create the center of the "little wheel turned by Faith" is your gracious service.

There are many ways to help Paul Kaivalya, our Kitchen Supervisor. Shifts during the day and night are open and awaiting your energy with Full and Part-time scholarship possibilities.
Specifically:
Clean-up: 2 Supervisor/Co-captains
1-2 helpers per meal and dessert

Beverages: 2 Preparers/ Co-Captains
3-4 helpers throughout the day

Preparation: 2-3 per meal
Dessert Preparer
Special Diets Prime Creator

Preferably these positions are filled by teens:

It is always a challenge to fill these places. It is an effort made with Love and Attention that can be depleting or exhilarating. Please join us, if the opportunity appeals to your desire to assist our 51st camp, "The All Pervading Life In Space", to be a blessing for all of us.
