Ozark Sufi Camp Spring

All Thy Holy Names and Forms = May 22-27 2009

My experience this year was different than any before; I dropped all baggage at the airport & drove to camp with an open heart, and lots of desire to experience whatever might happen. I found myself activating my "observer self" - not the detached judge of persons & events, but the One within who watches for sparks of the One around me. In the past, I might have had some resistance to the sesshin, but this year it was just what the Doctor ordered! During morning practice, Nuria gave us some practical advice on dealing creatively with distractions while sitting quietly- these suggestions turned to gold! Sesshin was a wonderful way to set a sober & focused tone for the camp.

There was some discussion floating around camp this year about how we all experience our evening Zikrs. The poet Hafiz often speaks of the tavern where Lovers drink with the Beloved; and there is certainly a wonderful sense of joy, release, & ecstasy which spontaneously arises during an energized Zikr. This a beautiful gift to the Lovers who create a "group field" of love & intention to join with the Beloved. It is best received as a gift with gratitude and no expectation. I found myself this year trying to "stay awake" more than float away on the wave of energy. It was a subtle difference that was somewhat novel to me, and I learned that a few other folks were having a similar experience. I also experienced more flow & spontaneity than ever before; this is not new to camp- living in the eternal Now is a real part of the Ozark camp experience. But this year seemed more intensified for me. What about you?
